Are You Getting in the Photographer's Way?

I had finally fit all of the bridal party into a position including all seven groomsmen and all seven bridesmaids, with three flower girls and two ring bearers, for a group picture at the ceremony site. It had certainly taken some wrangling and finagling. I stepped back to finally take the shot with my camera, and suddenly I was surrounded. A horde of people stepped up and brought out their phones and iPads, snapping away a billion pictures before I could even bring my camera up to my eye. Um hey, there's a photographer here!

I let everyone snap their photos before kindly asking them all to step back for me to snap mine. But this brings up an issue that I'd just like to share with everyone. Consider this an open letter to all family members and guests of the wedding. Please take a moment. This won't be too uncomfortable.

I get that we're in an age of Instagram. I too love to capture moments. But there comes a time when looking through a phone screen just cannot compare to living in the moment. There are a lot of times, especially if I'm at my friend's wedding, where I do not bring a camera. Nor do I pull out my phone to take photos. (GASP! A photographer not taking pictures!) It's because without that distraction, I can actually enjoy the special occasion before me. I know I'll be able to see the photos that the photographer will provide later. There's a reason the Bride and Groom hired a professional photographer. And if you keep getting in that photographer's way, how does that reflect on the investment the couple has put forth for this day?

I know you want to get instant photos. I simply ask that maybe you wait for the reception, when things are a little less crazy. I ask for the respect that should be shown to the Bride and Groom on their day, that they will receive the professional photos they want, without "Uncle Bob" lurking in the picture as he tries to take the same pictures with his camera. I promise you will see the photos. Please be a part of the moment, not a hindrance. I'd rather you exist in the photos with them or at least share in the emotion, without trying to see everything through a screen.

So step back. Put your phone and tablets away. Don't bring your DSLR. Be happy. Enjoy the moment with the couple, and know that they are grateful you are there sharing in their union. I'll take care of the rest! ;)

Father and Daughter First Look

We all know the concept of first looks, where the bride and groom see each other before the wedding. It's usually filled with tearful exclamations and amazing emotions. It helps to air them out before the ceremony and keep everyone calm and cool during the procession. However, there's another look that can make for a wonderful emotional moment, and an excellent set of photos.

The Father of the Bride seeing his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress is such a heart felt moment. I've been known to be a daddy's girl, and I think most young women can say the same. The emotions that dads feel when they see their little girl about to be married is such an amazing thing to capture.

So I say to all the prospective brides out there: surprise your dad on the wedding day. Let him see you in the dress for the first time and have that moment with him. It's something he will remember for the rest of his life as a moment he can cherish.

Temecula Winery Wedding | Lauren + Steven

A couple of weekends ago, I had the lovely opportunity to shoot a wedding with another photographer named Melissa Morelli. Her cousin Steven married his gorgeous bride Lauren at a winery in Temecula. The sun was shining, the wine was flowing, and everyone looked beautiful.

The rings were captured on a wine barrel: I just love the rustic element showcasing the wedding bands. The wedding dress was hanging from vines at the winery. I was in love with the simplicity of the design, including the white rose boutonniere and the gold bowl holding the centerpiece bouquet.

I'm in love with these wedding details. The wine bottles and vases were spray painted gold and held only a few flowers. The welcome sign was a nice touch too!

Maui Trip | Babies and Beaches

Maui is a mixture of amazing beaches, tropical waterfalls, and strange desert climates. My husband's sister, Brie, lives in Lahaina with her family: Casey, Georgia, and baby Isaac. We decided to take a vacation to visit them and see Hawaii for the first time. It was magnificent. The water is so blue. The weather is so inviting. And the family time was fun too! I snapped some photos of family, which I'll share below but I cannot stress enough how much we needed this break from the mainland to relax and catch up. Life can get hectic, and it is so important to take some well deserved time for yourself and your family.

The Maui ocean views are the best. This one captured a rain storm coming through.

Say hello to baby Isaac. He is the cutest blue-eyed nephew under age 1! He loves to touch feet and play with his sister.

My brother and sister: Casey and Brie. These two have an amazing relationship that proves to us all that real love exists. These two souls were made for each other. They met in high school and were married in Hawaii with a small collection of family to see them unite. They truly are the #relationshipgoals to work toward.

We did so many amazing things in Maui. We snorkeled, hiked, climbed, paddled and made waves! My husband golfed; I went to the spa. We saw a bajillion weddings that took place on the beaches every day. Every one was relaxed and time seemed to stand still.

The Road to Hana had some amazing waterfalls and jungle-like foliage. It felt like a whole different world from the other side of the island.

The Red Sand Beach in Hana isn't so much sand as it is little rocks with a reddish tint. Definitely a climb to get here too, scrambling over rocks and hiking around sharp cliffs. I actually bruised my hands from a short fall I took climbing around the rocks.

Maui certainly captured our hearts and I have no doubt that we will be visiting again. It's hard to resist smiling faces, the beach, and the surf. I hope I can return to photograph a wedding here, I can imagine so many beautiful ideas and places to have a union.
