I have been chasing creativity like a hound dog chasing a fox. And creativity, like the cunning creature it is, continues to confound me. I keep looking around the corner, hoping I’ll see it sitting there. But it never is.
The thing about creativity is that it comes to you. You cannot chase it without first submitting to it. A fox will not walk up to you unless you are still, comfortable, and calm. The same is true with creativity. Stress and reaction do not bring out any sort of inspired mind.
A long time ago, in another lifetime it feels like, I took an art class. When I was confronted with a large sheet of paper and told to create something on it, I froze. Staring at it and forcing myself to think creatively weren’t working. Days went by, and that paper remained blank. Finally, even though I felt like it was giving up, I relaxed and stopped thinking about it. It was then that the idea came to me to not paint, but use charcoal to create a smokey face. I made an A on that project.
I would never have had the inspiration to create without first existing in a relaxed state. As a photographer I also need to be in that relaxed state to capture and produce amazing work. It’s something to think about as we continue to push forward. I’m relaxed at a wedding, it’s strange. But all the love and people coming together to celebrate a new beginning just gets me so excited and inspired.
I’m really excited to see what fox I catch next.
